Suit Care 101: How to Maintain Your Investment
Proper suit care extends the life of your garment by years. Learn the essentials of cleaning, storing, and maintaining your bespoke suits.
A well-made suit can last a decade or more with proper care. Here's how to protect your investment and keep your garments looking sharp for years to come.
Hang It Properly
Always use a wide, contoured wooden hanger that supports the shoulders. Wire hangers distort the shape of the jacket over time. Hang trousers by the cuffs or on a clamp hanger to maintain their crease.
Brush After Every Wear
A natural-bristle garment brush removes dust, lint, and surface particles that degrade fabric over time. Brush in downward strokes after each wearing — it takes thirty seconds and makes a significant difference.
Rest Between Wears
Never wear the same suit two days in a row. Give each suit at least 24 to 48 hours to air out and recover its shape. This reduces creasing, allows moisture to evaporate, and extends the life of the fabric.
Limit Dry Cleaning
Dry cleaning uses chemicals that gradually break down natural fibres. Aim to dry clean no more than twice per season. Between cleanings, spot-treat stains and air out your suit in a well-ventilated space. Steam can refresh wrinkles without the harshness of pressing.
Store Seasonally
When storing suits for off-season periods, use breathable garment bags — never plastic. Plastic traps moisture and can cause mildew. Add cedar blocks to your closet to repel moths and absorb moisture naturally.
Address Repairs Promptly
A loose button, a small tear, or a fraying hem will only worsen with time. Bring your suit to a skilled tailor at the first sign of wear. At Bremer Suits, we offer complimentary minor repairs for garments we've made.
The Bottom Line
Your suit is an investment in how you present yourself to the world. Treat it with the same care and respect it gives you in return.
